Tolerates most growing conditions making it easy to grow.  Grow in partial shade in extreme temperatures.  Prefers well drained soil but can grow in compacted soil.  Water young plants well.  Once mature it is much more drought tolerant.  Prefers fertile soil but can grow in poor soil. Bright yellow flowers grow on shrubs. St. John's wort is used as an antidepressant. Studies have shown that it has a small effect on mild to moderate depression over a period of about 12 weeks. St. John's has been shown to cause dangerous and possibly deadly interactions with commonly used medicines such as some birth control medications. Use in infused oils, salves, in tinctures and teas fresh or dried.  It is very important to always talk with your healthcare provider before using this herb.
